Polo’s Advanture
「Pick your weapon and start the advanture! 」







OVERVIEW
 

Polo’s Advanture is a sticker cartoon style 2D shooting game with a top-down perspective. 

Players will take on the role of Polo, who travels back to the Twin Cities, wielding the weapon "Bang Bang Gun" of the hero Jinx, defeating the out of control Hex machine or alchemy cans, and completing the adventure in  Piltover  and Zaun.










BEGINNING




This project originated from a  limited time development Game Jam competition.

The competition was held by the League of Legends Mobile Official and Communication University of China, limited to 36 days. The purpose of this competition is to stimulate the creative thinking of digital art creators, regardless of the type of gameplay, using mini games as carriers to explore the artistic expression and innovative gameplay of mini games.

 By creating innovative and attractive character designs and scene designs, and proposing novel gameplay proposals and implementation, it showcases a profound understanding and unique perspective of the League of Legends Mobile universe.








When I heard about the competition, I was attending an offline game trial exhibition as a producer and exhibitor of Blessing. 

I think this is a great opportunity because Blessing was developed solely by me, I have never tried to work with somebody before. 

I want to try teamwork to create a brand new game, which may bring me great improvement. Working together in a team is also a very interesting experience. But with only one month to go, from building a team to completing a brand new game, it's not a small challenge.Luckily I finally found my team as the leader, 3 of them are my classmates in my university. The rest one is my friend since middle school, we wrote many norvels and often talked about games.

The primary question is, what type of game should we make? What art style is adopted? How should a team of five divide their work?





INSPRATION





At the same time as we are creating, Arcane Season 2 is being aired consecutively. As early as the Season 1, I was a loyal fan of it.  Arcane Season 1 is a masterpiece that reaches its peak in art, technology, narrative, and emotional depth. It is not just a beautiful animation, but also a profound exploration of human nature, society, and destiny.

 It uses almost perfect performance to tell the world that a game adapted animation can carry unlimited depth and power. It rightfully won the Emmy Award and will be hailed as an unbeatable legend for a long time to come.

As a player of League of Legends for over a decade, I suggested to my team members to design a game with the theme of Arcane. My teammates all expressed agreement after watching it.











DEVELOPMENT





Our initial idea was to involve as many champions as possible and create a 2D platform adventure game where players can use the skills of the  champions. Later on, we found that the cost of making it this way was very high, and it was difficult to complete it within a month. So it was decided to switch to a top-down shooting game, with Polo, the mascot of League of Legends, as the protagonist, wielding weapons that represent the champion’s for adventure. Players only need to move and shoot, which is simple enough for anyone to quickly get started.


Another point to note is that we must respect the worldview setting of League of Legends Mobile before we can engage in artistic creation or secondary processing of commercial IP.


In the universe of the League of Legends,  Piltover and Zaun are sisters cities. We plan to take inspiration from this and use the vertical terrain from the deep underground Zaun crack to the soaring Hex Flying Gate as our level process. After several days of design, we found that this was still too complicated for mini games, so we had to separately design the levels of Piltover and Zaun. This is very regrettable.







Piltover is located in the center of the continent and is the academic and scientific capital of Rune Land. Many talented people freely express their talents here, and  Piltover is under the command of a parliament composed of nobles with strict hierarchy.

Zaun is located under  Piltover. It is the world of industrial conglomerates, and due to the harsh growth environment, many people even use extreme methods to pursue technological progress.











STORY



Polo accidentally arrived at Piltover and Zaun through an unstable portal. 
When it woke up, it saw many out of control Hex Technology machines and tins of gold refining.
 In order to return to its hometown, it picked up Jinx's Gatling gun and embarked on an adventure.

CHALLENGES






I am responsible for the position of team leader, program, and some art in the project. I need to lead the team from zero to the output of the project. This is my first time in a team, where each person works in their own area and then combines the resulting content together. Compared to working alone, it is much easier.

But on the other hand, it can also bring troubles, such as the different styles of works produced by different artists, which will appear uncoordinated in the game. My teammates are all classmates from the architecture department. They love games but don't know much about game development. There were also some controversies during the discussion, so the project progressed slowly at the beginning. We were in our junior year at the time and had a lot of coursework assignments in our studies. Everyone was working hard to create games in their spare time. The limited time given for this development competition is not much, so the pressure on our team is quite high.
But fortunately, we adjusted quickly afterwards and finally won the third prize, which surprised everyone.

It is fortunate and wonderful to be able to create a mini game for League of Legends, which I have been playing since childhood. The experience of working with a team to develop is more interesting and valuable than the results. I have learned a lot from it and I am very grateful to my teammates.
